The method in four steps

Hold each swatch close to the face, along the side of the cheek and jawline. Always compare two directions at a time, and watch the face, not the hair.

Find the ideal depth.

Start close to the client’s natural depth, then compare deeper and lighter options. Here you look at depth only, not warmth or coolness.

Does the client need more depth or more lightness?

Temperature

Define the temperature direction.

Stay at the chosen depth and compare cool, neutral and warm options along the dark, medium, light or red path.

Should the color be cooler, neutral or warmer?

Keep Value and Temperature, and compare strands that vary only in intensity. Choose the one that brightens the face without looking muted or overpowering.

Decide how much dimension the hair needs.

Blend the swatches with the client’s own hair to see how much variation suits them. Two clients can share the same Value and still need very different amounts of dimension.

Before you begin.

Does the kit include hair color formulas?

No. The Hair Match Method™ defines the ideal visual color direction. Formulas, chemical processes and technical execution are always decided by a qualified hairstylist.

Are the swatches real hair?

Yes. All 21 swatches are human hair, 14 inches (35.5 cm) long. They fall and reflect light like your client’s own hair, so the comparison next to the face is true to life.

Do I need to be a hairstylist to use it?

No. The method was built so color consultants can define the direction and communicate it clearly. The Pro Hair Color Guide™ explains the salon vocabulary you need.

Should I complete a personal color analysis first?

When possible, yes. Knowing your client’s value, temperature and intensity from the color analysis gives you a strong starting point for the hair comparisons.

Does the season decide the hair color?

No. The individual Hair Match analysis defines Value, Temperature, Intensity and Hair Contrast. The Seasonal Cards show common tendencies and help you explain the result to your client.
